For Those Hooked on Cleanliness

If decluttering is what helps you destress, here are Kondo’s six basic rules of tidying.

  1. Commit yourself to tidying up.
With commitment and drive you can do anything. Before you begin, don’t forget to put yourself in a positive mindset.

  2. Imagine your ideal lifestyle.
Let the joy of the end result motivate you. You got this!

  3. Finish discarding first.
Ditch those items that aren’t sparking joy! Doing this first makes organizing that much easier.

  4. Tidy by category, not by location.
Begin by piling all of your clothing or other items into one spot. This sounds terrifying, but it really allows you to see the volume of what you’re dealing with.

  5. Follow the right order.
The KonMari Methodä, as Kondo explains in her website, encourages tidying beginning with clothes, then moving onto books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items), and, finally, sentimental items.

  6. Ask yourself if it sparks joy.
As Kondo says, “Keep only those things that speak to the heart, and discard items that no longer spark joy. Thank them for their service – then let them go.”
