Six Must-Watch Modern Movie Musicals
Sometimes, it’s nice to pretend we live in a world where people spontaneously break into song and choreographed dance numbers.
Since that doesn’t happen in real life (at least, not that I’ve seen—one can hope), movie musicals are a great way to escape to a place that’s a little more melodic. Here’s a list of the best movie musicals to sing along to when you’re in the mood for a show-tune or two.
“Newsies”
Who doesn’t want to watch young Batman sing about the trials and tribulations of being a New York City newsie during the turn of the century? As a film major, I consider this to be Christian Bale’s greatest role. It’s got heart and charm, and the songs will absolutely stay with you for days on end (which is okay, because they’re incredibly catchy).
“Mamma Mia!”
I’d consider this movie the pinnacle of cinematic achievement. Sure, it’s not the most artistic or well made, but it’s got the most charm I’ve ever seen in a movie. Not to mention its re-watch-ability is off the charts. Please let me know if after watching it, you don’t want to move to Greece, listen to ABBA, or own denim overalls (or all three).
“Chicago”
Any fan of the stage show will know that this film takes some liberties with the story—however, I think they make it all the more compelling. This is definitely the film that comes to mind when I think of the phrase “razzle-dazzle,” as the backdrop of the 1920s gives it one of the most fun atmospheres of the films on this list.
“Phantom of the Opera”
Did anyone else go through a weird phase of being completely obsessed with this movie? Just me? Phantom is one of those movies that’s just fun to watch because of how committed the actors are to their roles—I mean hello, Minnie Driver! Plus, some of the most fun I’ve had in a viewing experience is trying (and failing) to hit those notorious operatic high notes. Try it! It’s hilarious!
“Hairspray”
Zac Efron. That’s all. Just kidding (not really)! Set against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement in Baltimore, the film manages to tackle some serious topics in its run time while still being incredibly fun to watch. It’s funny, sweet, and has a killer cast (again, Zac Efron).
“Moulin Rouge!”
For some reason, not many people bring up this movie as one of their go-to musicals. I want to change that. “Moulin Rouge!” is perhaps the weirdest musical ever, and that is exactly what makes it work so well. It’s campy and overly artistic, and the fun that Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman have just radiates off the screen. I highly recommend not researching anything else about this one before you watch it for the ultimate viewing experience—you’ll already know all the words, though!
The movie musical genre is one of my favorites. These films have the power to make you really believe that singing in the middle of the street is normal and that everyone knows spontaneous choreography at any given moment. They’re so much fun to watch, and I recommend you give them a go.
