What I Would Tell My Freshman Self

What I Would Tell My Freshman Self

I (along with a group of peers) recently had the opportunity to speak with freshmen females about our time at Auburn. The last question was, “what would you tell your freshman self?” We all sat silently for about two minutes in our attempt to answer both adequately and honestly. Here is the advice I shared.

Do not compare your experience to those around you.

Everyone is on different paths in college. Your friends, peers, and even those in your major are on different paths. Accept this as a win, and understand that differences in thoughts, people, jobs, and experiences are what makes life so great. It is so easy to look around and see friends involved in different things, doing more or less for their major, working full-time, etc., the important thing to remember is that your experience is yours, and is unique. I wish someone had told me when I first got here to find your people, find what you're passionate about, and do your homework.

It’s okay to change your major.

I came into college thinking that changing my major was looked down upon, and I never believed I would do it. However, I have since realized that expecting every freshman to have their future career planned out is unrealistic. I eventually applied for an on-campus job and have since found my passion, and ultimately ended up changing my major. College is meant to be a growing and learning experience, let that happen. And you can always reach out to the Career Center or a professor if you’re unsure.

Enjoy every minute.

I feel that my time in college passed by at super speed. At one moment you’re starting classes in August and then the next, the semester has already come to a close. And all that’s left are sweet memories and photos. So, take an extra hour and sit on Samford Lawn with friends, watch a sunset at the Red Barn, or get a Toomer’s Lemonade, because being in college doesn’t last forever.

Dear freshman Kazmine, it will work out and go way too fast. Change your major. Don’t compare your experience. Enjoy every minute, and…

Be Well, Auburn.

Meet Kazmine, a military child who found her true home in Auburn, Alabama. She is a sophomore majoring in Physical Activity and Health with a minor in marketing with the hopes of pursuing a career in sports marketing. Three years ago, a rare diagnosis left her unsure about life without sports, and now she has a love for helping people find balance between wellness and rest.

When she’s not in class you can find her cooking her next Pinterest recipe, or baking a sweet treat in the kitchen. Her heart is connected to the beach and pasta is her obsession. She is also determined to visit every Disney park around the world before she graduates college and is obsessed with Disney +. She loves talking to people and her best friend is her eight-year old sister!
