Life After Sports

Being a high school athlete (whether a starter or a sub) is a wonderful experience.

Getting to play the sport you love, to be a part of a team, and to represent your school is amazing. But what comes after?

While some athletes are fortunate enough to continue playing through college, most students must leave their sport behind — and it can be hard to do. You miss being part of a team, the thrill of the game, and even your coach’s insane conditioning practices. So what can you do about it?

Join an Intramural or Club Team

If you miss playing the game most, intramural sports are the best way to get back to the sport you love. And I know it isn’t the same. It may not be as competitive, but you should still try it. You get to play the game, be a part of a team again, and maybe even make some new friends. If you’re looking for some more intense competition, try joining a club team. Visit this page and simply contact the club and let the members know you’re interested.

Boost Your Workout Routine

No one expects you to maintain the physique you had when you were practicing your sport three hours per day, five days per week. For most college students, that kind of workout schedule just isn’t realistic. But if what you miss most about being a high school athlete is the physical intensity, you should try making your workout routine more challenging. Work toward a 10K (or even a marathon). Up your reps. Up your weights. Try one of The Rec’s group fitness classes. The possibilities are endless.

Get Involved on Campus

If your favorite aspect of high school sports was being part of a team, join a new one. Auburn has hundreds of student-run organizations on campus. These teams of people work together to make a difference in the world, to make a difference on campus, or just to enjoy their shared interests. It’s easy to find the new team that’s right for you.

Try Coaching

If you have a passion for the sport itself — and not just for playing it — consider becoming a coach. There are youth leagues near Auburn for soccer, softball and more, all of which are coached by volunteers. Being a part of the game again and passing on your love of your sport to the next generation is a priceless experience.

Although nothing can completely replace playing the game you love, hopefully these suggestions can help. Have some other ideas of how to live life after sports? Let us know in the comments!

Be well, Auburn.
