Random Acts of Kindness on Campus

There are approximately 30,000 students at Auburn. As hard as you try, you’ll never meet everyone here, but that doesn’t mean you can’t leave a positive impact.

On campus, everyone you encounter is likely battling stress, anxiety, homesickness, or all of the above. So why not do something to take the edge off? Read on for some simple ideas for cultivating kindness and spreading happiness on campus.

Sit with people in class

Simple, yet effective. Sitting with strangers in class is such an easy way to make new friends. I always try to make at least one new friend in each class. This way, I’m more motivated to actually attend the class, and I have a go-to study buddy for tests.

Pick up a stranger’s Starbucks tab

Someone did this for me once, and it 100% made my day! Not all heroes wear capes. Just tell the barista you want to pay for the person behind you. A little decline in your Tiger Card balance is definitely worth putting a smile on someone’s face and a latte in their hand.

Give out compliments

Give out compliments as freely as people on the concourse hand out flyers. We all love getting compliments, and they always feel more genuine coming from people we don’t know. So go up to a stranger today and *insert compliment here.*

Offer people rides

So many students on campus don’t have a car. If you’re attending an event for a club or a class, let everyone know you can drive if they need a ride. Being trapped in a moving vehicle truly bonds people like nothing else, and your new friend will without a doubt appreciate the transportation.

Send your notes

Maybe they have the flu or went out of town! Or maybe they just “forgot” they had class today. It happens to the best of us. Offer your friend from class your notes if they missed. They’ll be eternally grateful, and hopefully they return the favor when your time comes around.
