Tips from Your Average Plant Mom

Tips from Your Average Plant Mom

As someone who has gone from killing every plant I touched, to creating a modern jungle in my home, I thought I could share a few things I’ve learned along the way.

I started my plant journey in March of this past year. Quarantine definitely inspired this new hobby, but it’s still going strong, and I am a very proud plant mom. When starting out with plants, there are a few misconceptions that come up, and I’m here to clear some of those up for you.

Succulents and cacti are the easiest plants to keep alive.

Don’t fall for this one! Cacti and succulents are fairly difficult due to their specific watering requirements. They are prone to root rot, which is incredibly difficult to come back from. If you are looking for an easy beginner plant, Pothos is your best friend! These gorgeous vining plants are very easy and will make anyone believe you have a green thumb.

House plants are just too hard and take up too much time.

There are so many varieties of house plants out there that anyone can find something that works for their life. The key to being a successful plant parent is doing research before you buy anything. Most of my plants only require watering about once a month.

Indoor plants need a ton of light.

Some do, but not all. There are plenty of plants out there that can thrive in low to moderate light. Do your research. When you bring a new plant into your home, it can take a month or so to find out the best place for it.

Plants are toxic to animals.

Research. Research. Research. Some plants are toxic, but there are plenty that are perfectly safe for your furry friends. Here is a helpful toxic/non-toxic plant list from the ASPCA.

Once you do the research and decide which plants best fit your life, you’re on your way to a very fulfilling plant parent journey. Becoming a plant mom has given me a lot of confidence in my ability to take care of something. There is nothing more rewarding than noticing a new leaf on one of your plants. It has also connected me with old and new friends that share the same enthusiasm for plants. The community surrounding plants is truly amazing and so empowering.

House plants may seem intimidating, but they are manageable if you do the research. There are so many options out there that anyone can find the right plant for their life.

Be well, Auburn.
