Orange You Glad We Told You? Alternatives To The Tanning Bed

If you’re thinking about using the tanning bed right now, don’t do it.

I know what you’re thinking: it’s winter, I’m pale, and the tanning bed will give me a natural tan look. Newsflash, it does, but only at the price of skin rashes, increased risk of skin cancer, and more.

The American Academy of Dermatology Association explains, “Indoor tanning can increase the risk of developing the two most common types of skin cancer— squamous cell carcinoma by 58% and basal cell carcinoma by 24%. Using tanning beds before age 20 can increase your chances of developing melanoma by 47%, and the risk increases with each use.”

The good news is, there are SO many alternatives to the tanning bed that will get you looking golden and fresh off the beach. There are many different brands, tones, prices, and styles within each of these categories. It is beneficial to try a few brands before settling on a favorite because everyone’s skin is different.

Tanning Lotion

It's exactly what it sounds like— a lotion. It uses DHA, which promotes melanin synthesis, making you look tan while moisturizing your skin. This is a great option when you are in a hurry and don’t have time to sit around in sweatpants before you can rinse off.

Tanning Foam

This is similar to tanning lotion, except it is foamy. It shows up immediately on your skin and gets darker the longer you leave it on. The only downside to tanning foam is that it gets on your sheets and clothing, so you usually have to wait around in sweats for a few hours before you can rinse off and go about your day.

Typically you use a mitt to apply the foam to your body. If you decide to apply it to your face, I recommend using a makeup brush, because it allows for an even application without missing any crevices.

Tanning Drops

Usually, the drops come in a small serum bottle. To use, apply drops to your hand, mix them with your moisturizer, then apply. In my opinion, drops are the best tanning solution for your face because you can use your own facial moisturizer.

Spray Tan

The classic, OG. If you think of Ross Geller when you think of spray tans, we should be friends. The two options here are a booth spray or a person-to-person spray tan.

You might be thinking, why would I want a person to spray me when I could do this in the privacy of my own booth? Well, spray tan professionals see lots of people every day, and they are much more accurate with spray tan coloring and placement. In my opinion, having someone give you the spray tan is much better than going to the booth.

So, if you're thinking about going to the tanning bed, don’t! There are so many options that are healthier and better for your skin. Embrace your glow and

Be Well, Auburn.

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, and raised in Roswell, Georgia, Avery is a senior studying Communications and minoring in Marketing. She chose Auburn because of its southern charm, but mainly because her big brother was here. Avery’s favorite place to be is at the lake, preferably wake surfing. If she isn’t there, she’s probably on the phone with her grandma, getting a McDonald’s Diet Coke, or watching reruns of The Office with her roommates. Her survival kit consists of chapstick and a color-coordinated calendar, and she doesn’t go a day without listening to country music. With the little amount of time she has left at Auburn, she hopes to learn many new things to take along with her on her journey of life.
