A Toast to Good Food

Turn on your toaster and get to toasting!

If you ever struggle with making breakfast because you either don’t have enough time, didn’t think ahead to meal-plan, or don’t have a kitchen because you live in a dorm, this article might have the solution for you! Toast can be a delicious and nutritious meal with the right ingredients, and as college students who are always on the go, it is the perfect quick and easy meal.

Avocado Toast

It’s one of the classics for a good reason. All you need is one avocado, sliced or mashed, and your favorite seasonings for flavor. I added red pepper flakes, salt, pepper, and Trader Joe’s Everything But the Bagel seasoning to this recipe. If you have a kitchen and some extra time, you can add one cooked egg for an added source of protein. Bonus points if your presentation is better than mine!

Peanut Butter & Banana Toast

 This one is my personal favorite! I make peanut butter and banana toast about 2 times a week (usually on the days that I wake up late). This time I subbed an unsalted rice cake for bread, which is a great alternative if you’re gluten-free. I started by spreading the peanut butter, adding 7 slices of banana, drizzling some honey, and sprinkling chia seeds. If you want to add some extra flavor, I like to add a dash of cinnamon. Simple, healthy, and so yummy!

Cucumber & Hummus Toast

If you’re in the mood for a savory, snacky type of toast, look no further! For this toast, I chose to use multigrain toast, regular hummus as my spread, and a Persian (mini) cucumber. Even with using the most basic ingredients, I found this to be a delicious high-protein snack. For more flavor, you can always use a different type of hummus or add seasonings on top.

Greek Yogurt & Strawberry Toast

Yogurt on toast? I know it sounds scary, and it did to me too. However, I was pleasantly surprised with this dessert-like toast that was not at all soggy. I took a regular piece of white bread to toast, added strawberry-flavored Greek yogurt as my spread, and sliced 2 strawberries as my topping. Although it wasn’t my favorite of the four, I enjoyed that it curbed my sweet tooth while still being a healthy snack.

Don’t sleep on toast! With the right ingredients, it’s healthy, quick, and easy to make, and is a great option for a dorm-room meal. There are so many different types you can make, so find your favorite and get to toasting.
