Involvement Tips

Well, you’ve made it! Here you are at Auburn with your journey just about to begin.

As a very recent alumni, after four great years at Auburn, I have accumulated some advice for incoming freshmen about how to get involved.

Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there

The first few weeks of college can be stressful. Trying to find your group and not get lost in the swing of things. Though classes can be a place to meet friends, most of my friends over the years came from my involvement, so try anything and everything. There is so much out there, and at the end of the day, most organizations don’t require any immediate obligation. For instance, I signed up for the AU Sailing Club on a whim and never ended up attending a meeting. It can take some time to find what fits for you so try on different hats and see what sticks.

Involvement doesn’t just have to be on campus

Sure, when people think of involvement, they immediately think of things on campus, however, many involvement opportunities lay around the community as well. Whether you are looking for a local church, a place to volunteer like an animal shelter or food pantry, or even a job, there are plenty of ways to find a place with the Auburn family outside of the University’s limits.

Talk to people

Though it may seem obvious, talking to people is a fantastic way to start making Auburn feel like home. Wherever you find yourself, strike up a conversation. Not every single person you talk to will become your best friend, but it is great to be able to feel connected to an unfamiliar place.

Look into your interests and discover new ones

When you are looking for activities to get involved in, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone! Find clubs and organizations that follow your interests and hobbies but also look to try something new. There is no better time than now to try anything and everything so why not go for it? Find something related to your major and try that too! Professional development outside of the classroom can be a great experience too.

Don’t get overwhelmed

Yeah, it’s a lot. But don’t let it drown you. Take it all one day at a time and, though it may take some time to settle in, before you know it you will never want to leave.

Be Well, Auburn.
