Beating Burnout: Embracing Rest as a Wellness Practice

It’s quite often we as college students experience major burnout. We’re tired of the same routines every day, always being stressed, and never really having time for ourselves.
What if I told you this doesn’t have to happen? There are so many ways to prevent burnout, so join me as I tell you why rest is one of the best wellness practices you could try.
The summer is the perfect time to reset and start prioritizing rest. We’re done with the homework, the meetings, the clubs, and the thousands of other things that filled our days. It’s finally time to relax.
The best way to do this is to catch up on our rest. The last couple months we’ve been waking up early and staying up late, so take the next couple days or weeks to sleep in without feeling guilty for it.
It’s also important to prioritize yourself in the next couple weeks before the fall semester starts again. Find some new hobbies, learn some delicious new recipes, or simply sit and watch your favorite tv shows and movies. I always use the summer months to catch up on TV and movies that I’ve missed over the school year. A comfortable couch and a good snack is my favorite way to treat myself.
If you do start to feel burnout in your everyday activities, don’t be afraid to switch things up a bit. Find a different book if the one you’re reading is feeling like a chore; find a new club to join that can add some exciting things to your seemingly boring schedule; take a day off from the world if leaving the house is feeling like something you don’t want to do. Everyone needs a break from time to time, so don’t hesitate to call out or cancel plans if you need to.
Above all, stay connected with friends and family even if your days are packed. Communication with the people around you is a huge source of joy and motivation for most people, so don’t let the relationships in your life slip through the cracks of your hectic schedule.
Be Well, Auburn.

Molly was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama. Despite a family full of Alabama fans, a brief tour of Auburn’s campus captivated her heart, and she soon embraced the vibrant atmosphere and welcoming community. Initially unsure of her path, Molly began her college career as a journalism major. After one year at an SEC school, however, she quickly discovered her passion for sports, specifically basketball. Now a sports production major, she hopes to work with Auburn Athletics following graduation.
When she's not busy with work or classes, you can find Molly at a basketball or soccer game, enjoying a movie marathon, spending time with her close friends, or driving down the road to visit her parents. In the next few years, Molly aims to remain involved on campus and continue to learn all she can about the sports industry... and, of course, graduate!
