Simple Ways to Maintain A Healthy Diet

Summer is the best time to eat healthy because it is so easy!

During the summer, we usually eat snacks like fruits and other refreshing items to keep our bodies hydrated. Some refreshing and hydrating foods are vegetables, salads, fruits, and smoothies. Here are some easy ways to stay healthy this summer and incorporate these refreshing foods into your diet.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is one of the easiest things to do during the summer since it’s so hot outside. Our bodies always crave water, but plain water can sometimes get boring. One way that we can help this is by adding fruits to our water. Here are some combinations to try:

  • Lemon and lime

  • Orange and mint

  • Grapefruit and rosemary

  • Strawberry and basil

  • Watermelon and mint

  • Blueberries and cucumber

  • Pineapple and coconut water

    • This one is one of my favorites! Coconut water is so hydrating and is delicious!

Add hydrating fruits to your diet

This method makes getting water in your system easy without drinking it. These can include:

  • Watermelon

  • Cantaloupe

  • Oranges

  • Apricots

  • Grapefruit

  • Peaches

Embrace Seasonal Produce

Summer is the peak season for lots of produce. Visit a local farmers' market to get the most out of the summer's offerings. Here are some of the best things to get during the summer:

  • Apples

  • Avocados

  • Bananas

  • Blackberries

  • Blueberries

  • Cantaloupe

  • Cucumber

  • Lemons

  • Peaches

  • Raspberries

  • Strawberries

  • Tomatoes

  • Watermelon

Start Cooking

Summer is the best time to try out some new recipes that you have been saving. Find ones that are refreshing and healthy for your body. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Strawberry pineapple salsa

  • Summer corn salad with avocado

  • Cowboy caviar

  • Grilled zucchini salad

  • Cilantro lime pasta salad

Sweet Treats in Moderation

Ice cream is so good, especially after a long day in the sun, but some healthier alternatives are just as good. Give items like these a try this summer:

  • Fruit sorbet

  • Yogurt bark

  • Smoothie popsicles

  • Chocolate-dipped frozen bananas

  • Coconut water popsicles

Overall, eating healthier in the summer is much easier than we think! Making the choices is the hardest part. Enjoy the summer and enjoy some good food!

 Be Well, Auburn.
