Three Benefits of Taking On the Gym With Friends

Going to the gym can feel like another task to check off the to-do list, especially if you’re going by yourself.

In my experience, going with friends can increase your motivation, help you set goals, and make a workout feel like a social event rather than a task.

Accountability

Stay accountable! The most important benefit of hitting The Rec with friends is the aspect of responsibility. Committing to working out with another person helps you set achievable goals. On those days when you don’t feel like going, having a buddy can help you stick to your commitment. You and your partner can check up on each other’s progress weekly.

Inspiration

A positive workout experience could mean running together. I know running isn’t for all of us (especially me!), but imagine the motivation from running alongside someone at the same pace. Another partner workout could be alternating machines. Once you’ve established a weekly routine, you can start to find different variations of workouts to do together. You’ll most likely work harder and switch up your workout routine with someone else around than alone; I know that’s true for me.

Socialization

Make it a social experience. The Rec is more exciting when you are treating your time here as a social event. I’ve found myself valuing my gym time more when I’m spending time with a friend I haven’t seen in a while.

Now that you know a few benefits of going to the gym with friends, call or text that friend that you’ve been wanting to see and set up a gym date. It’s time to stay accountable, motivated, and have fun all at the same time!

Be well, Auburn.
