Why I love Hey Day Market
Going to Hey Day Market was exciting— not only due to of the rumored tasty food, but because I could use my declining dollars to splurge guilt-free.
As a senior, I have enjoyed trying new foods and restaurants during my time at Auburn. One cuisine I have explored is Asian, specifically Indian and Vietnamese. Being in Auburn for three years, I have tried almost everything I can think of— that was until I heard that the Hey Day Market was opening.
Interestingly, the name “Hey Day Market” stemmed from an Auburn tradition dating back to WWII in which Auburn University’s students created a day to encourage greeting each other in a friendly atmosphere. The Student Government Association still carries on this tradition on “Hey Day” by handing out name tags and encouraging students to greet others.
The Hey Day Market currently consists of nine vendors that differentiate in types of food: Khoodles, Cubanita, Little Darling, Loud Roots, Pizzeria, Saint Bernardo, Wildchild, Cherry Moon, and Pokémen. There’s also a green outdoor space for eating and lawn games.
After wandering around each vendor, I decided to try Khoodles. I ordered their most popular item, “grandma noodles,” which is a Malaysian dish. Not only was my meal pleasant, but my ordering experience was too. The employees were very kind and the atmosphere was vibrant.
After eating my noodles, I knew I could not leave without getting something sweet. At Saint Bernardo, the gelato shop, I was greeted by the employee asking what flavor I would like. Surprisingly, I had never had gelato before. I requested cookie dough, and could not believe what I was missing out on.
My first experience eating at Hey Day Market far exceeded my expectations. Next time, I think I will try the tacos from Wildchild. I was thrilled to contribute to the Hospitality Management Program and Culinary Sciences. Even though my childhood dream of being a chef did not stay, I am excited to see what lies ahead for these students.
