Fall Workout Ideas

Fall is fast approaching, and you should take advantage of it while you can.
Last year was my first time experiencing fall in Auburn, and I was in shock! Born and raised in Texas, the leaves on trees don’t change from a luscious green to a shiny gold, from an auburn orange to a canary red, and from a burnt umber to a burgundy before the earth is coated in a blanket of leaves. Seeing how fast winter seemed to come last year, I’m taking advantage of every second I have to be outside.
This fall, as I’m getting back into a routine of fitness and exercises, there is no way I will be staying solely in the Rec. Here are ways that you can get outside to experience the beautiful cool fall weather while also staying fit!
Cardio Workouts
Outdoor Run:
One of my favorite cardio exercises is running. It always clears my head of any stress or anxiety. That is especially true when running underneath Auburn’s beautiful oak trees. If you don’t know where to start or where to go, check out Auburn’s campus walking trails or just follow the orange paw prints on the walkways all over campus.
Outdoor Cycle:
Another good idea for a fall workout is cycling around campus or in a park. That way, you can cover more ground and see more nature than if you were just running, while still getting exercise. If you don’t have a bike, that’s okay, you can rent one from Auburn Outdoors located at the Rec center.
Stadium Stairs
With fall comes football! Although Jordan-Hare might not be open to the public, multiple other stadiums are open for you to do a stair workout. Running, jogging, lunging, and other stair workouts are a great source of a cardio and leg workout.
Strength and Conditioning
Bench Circuits
Working out in a park is a great way of experiencing the fall season. Park Bench circuits are simple because all you really need is a bench and some optional extra weights for an increased intensity of exercise. A bench circuit could contain step-ups, elevated hip thrusts, mountain climbers, bench push-ups, tricep dips, planks, and more.
Pumpkin Workouts
One fun idea of a fall-themed workout is to replace your dumbbell with a pumpkin! Yes, that’s right, a pumpkin! Some workout routines might look like lunges, goblet squats, overhead presses, Romanian deadlifts, and overhead tricep extensions. It’s festive and functional!
Wellness Of Your Mind
Not only is it important to keep your body in shape, but also your mind!
Outdoor Yoga
One way to exercise your body and mind is yoga in the cooler mornings of autumn, bonus points if it’s during sunrise! Yoga helps wake up your body, calms your mind, and sets a positive, energized tone for the rest of the day, especially when you spend the first moments of the morning surrounded by the sights and sounds of fall.
Homework Outside
Before you skip, homework outside is a great way to experience fall. It makes your body happy when you exercise your mind, your mind happy when you’re outside, and your teachers happy when you do your homework!
Nature Walk
If lifting pumpkins, running, or doing your homework isn’t your cup of pumpkin spice latte, that’s perfectly fine! One simple way of exercise is walking. You can walk around campus or in parks, such as around the lake at Chewacla State Park. The slower pace allows your body and mind to slow down. You start to notice the small details of the way sunlight passes through the trees and warms the ground, the way the family of birds sing to each other, and the way the fall leaves hit the water and cause a ring of ripples on the surface.
All the above workouts for your body and mind are great, but above all, just get outside. Touch some grass! Step on some crunchy leaves! Get your head out of your phone and look around you! Experience autumn in Auburn!
